Borders (UK) Ltd and Books Etc have been working with Reading is Fundamental (RIF), an initiative of the National Literacy Trust, since 1998 on a nationwide literacy project.
The aim of the project is to introduce schoolchildren to their local bookshop and help them to discover the fun of reading. Classes of children can visit their local Borders or Books Etc store where they listen to stories, take part in a quiz or meet an author. They will also each receive a free £5 book token to spend on a book of their choice. To date, almost 15,000 children have taken part.

"The children's enthusiasm for reading improves markedly over the year thanks to the bookshop visits. Many have never visited a bookshop before and they really look forward to each visit. It is much easier to introduce a range of different authors and genres in class after the visits…The project is valuable to our school because many of the children come from backgrounds where reading is not a natural pastime."
Teacher, Croydon primary school
"The children loved the visits and enjoy getting new texts to read, and rated it as their favourite trip! It is so nice for children to choose and share their own book each time. Thank you; it has been a great experience."
Teacher, Lambeth primary school
"The children who went to the bookshop typically don't 'like' reading very much but after the visit I had trouble getting them to go out to play because they wanted to stay in and look at and read their books!"
Teacher, Camden primary school
"Children are now reading more, want to go to the bookstore and buy their own books, and have in general a more positive attitude towards reading. They also have a higher opinion of authors and some feel they could write a book sometime in their lives."
Teacher, Tower Hamlets primary school
