The author the successful His Dark Materials trilogy has decided to use his talents to write a comic strip.
Philip Pullman will be working with an illustrator to create the Adventures of John Blake which will be printed in a new comic called DFC at the end of this month.
The story is set in modern times and features a sailor who happens upon magical beasts and legends from the past.
Mr Pullman said he was inspired to write for comics by his fond memories of reading them when he was younger.
"I was brought up on comics like the Eagle, Wizard and Beano, though not so much Dandy.
"This is what I want to bring back to today's youngsters good storytelling, but with more adventurous and original illustrations," he added.
Illustrator John Aggs, described the images of the comic as being inspired by Japanese Manga graphic novels. He uses techniques such drawing pictures that look like they have been spilt over broken glass.
Manga is widely read in Japan and has been in its present modern form since the 1940s.
