Prize for funny books launched

Prize for funny books launched
15.5.2008

The first award that recognises funny children's books is being launched by a national charity.

The Roald Dahl Funny Prize has been set-up by Booktrust and is the brainchild of Michael Rosen, the author who was chosen by the charity as Children's Laureate for his contribution to literature.

Mr Rosen reported that he created the award to remind readers of the fun in reading comedic books.

Entries will be divided into two groups with the first category for books aimed at children under six and the second for those aged seven to 14-years old.

Sophie Dahl, Mr Dahl's grand-daughter, will be joining three other judges on the panel and said she is delighted to be taking part.

"A prize that involves laughing until your belly aches and you get the hiccups is the kind of prize I want to be involved with for eternity. It's a pretty irresistible proposition," she added.

Roald Dahl wrote up to 60 stories in his lifetime across many genres including scripts for television and film.
