18.3.2008

Period drama Cranford is leading the pack for the upcoming Bafta TV awards, securing four nominations.

Dame Judi Dench is up for best actress, alongside her co-star Dame Eileen Atkins. The two stars, both 73, played sisters in the series.

Based on the books by Elizabeth Gaskell, the BBC adaptation has also been nominated for best drama serial, up against Murphy's Law, Britz and Five Days, and audience programme of the year, along with Strictly Come Dancing among others.

Among the best actor nominees are Matthew MacFadyen for his role in Secret Life and Andrew Garfield for Boy A, which is also nominated in the single drama category.

EastEnders and Emmerdale will go head-to-head for the continuing drama prize, along with Holby City and The Bill, while Stephen Merchant's performance in the Extras Christmas Special and Peep Show's David Mitchell are among those up for comedy prizes.

The winners will be announced at a star-studded ceremony at the London Palladium on April 20th, 2008.ADNFCR-1008-ID-18513946-ADNFCR
